Recognized mix for native country hedging is: 30% Crataegus monogyna (quickthorn) 15% Prunus spinosa (blackthorn) 12% Corylus avellana (hazel) 10% Acer campestre (field maple) 5% Cornus sanguinea (common dogwood) Ligustrum vulgare (privet) Rosa canina (dog rose), Viburnum opulus (guelder rose), Viburnum lantana (wayfaring tree).
Hedging should be cut down by two thirds to encourage bushy growth at ground level, so by offering 60-100cm tall whips this will give you 30cm average height after clipping back. It is worth following this advice, as growth can be rapid enough to get back to the 80-100 height in one season and makes a much bushier hedge.
