Meconopsis cambrica 9cm
Welsh Poppy. Tap-rooted, decideous perennial with bluish green leaves and lemon-yellow to orange flowers. Leaves can be hairless or hairy and measure up to 20cm (8") long. They are borne on branched stems and in basal tufts. Flowers emerge from mid-spring to mid-autumn on slender stalks (25cm/10") long, from the upper leaf axils. They are solitary, shallowly cup-shaped and measure approximately 5-6cm (2-2.5") across. Final height 45cm (18"), spread 25cm (10"). Grow in humus-rich, moist but well-drained, neutral to slightly acid soil. Plant in part shade, in a fairly open position to let the air circulate and prevent rotting. They also need to be sheltered from cold drying winds.
