Wild Service tree. Chequers Tree. Griping Tree.
Spreading deciduous tree with broad pinnate leaves. Creamy flower clusters appear in May/June, followed by small brown fruits. Ht 12m + Spread 8m. Leaves turn crimson-red in autumn. When fully grown, the bark of the tree often peels back in rectangular strips, giving it a 'chequered' look. This tree will grow in loam, clay or chalk, but prefers a heavy soil in dappled shade, so is good for planting on the edge of a woodland. This is one of the rarest of our native trees, not commonly seen or used in English gardens.
Good for pollinating insects.
